The first time I tried journaling with my Bible open, I was sitting at a chipped wooden table with a lukewarm cup of coffee and a mind too full to focus. I didn’t have any grand spiritual plan. Just a worn-out notebook, a half-broken pen, and a quiet hunger for more.
I started slow. One verse. A few thoughts. Then silence.
But something strange happened as I stayed with it. The Word began to unfold. Like petals in the sun, not as knowledge to store but as Someone speaking my name. A presence. It wasn’t about crafting perfect insights or covering chapters. It was about being seen, known, and changed.
If you’re here, I imagine you feel it too, that longing to meet God not just in belief, but in intimacy. Bible journaling can become a doorway to that. Not a method, but a meeting place.
Let me show you what’s helped me.
Choose What You Love
You don’t need to be a calligrapher or a theologian. A simple Bible and a notebook are enough. If color helps your eyes light up, bring the highlighters. If doodles help you remember, then draw. And if poetry flows easier than prose, let that be your guide. Whatever helps you come alive in the Word—use it. Make the space yours. Make the space yours.
Make Space for the Sacred
You’ll need quiet, not necessarily in your surroundings, but in your heart. Maybe it’s the morning hush before the house wakes, or the stillness after everyone’s asleep. What matters is presence. Choose a time. Show up. Let your soul learn its way back to still waters.
Let the Word Shape Your Flow
Here’s a simple rhythm I use:
Key Verse — What pierced your heart today?
Observations — What’s happening here? Who’s involved? What’s being said?
Interpretation — What’s the deeper meaning? Where’s Jesus in this?
Application — What’s He saying to you? What needs to shift?
Prayer — Respond. Whisper or weep. Celebrate or confess. He’s listening.
Be Consistent, Not Perfect
Some days, I write a full page. Others, just one line. Sometimes, I don’t write at all. I’ll just sit and listen. That’s still journaling. Don’t chase performance. Chase Presence.
Over time, you’ll look back and realize these pages aren’t just notes. They’re stones of remembrance. They’re the history of God walking with you.
If you're feeling stuck or just want more guidance, I’ve put together a few tools that might help.
Bible Journaling Tools
The Bread and Life Guide to Bible Journaling and Study is a gentle companion if you're new or looking for more depth. It includes prompts, reflections, and structure to help you enter into Scripture with expectancy and clarity. Not as a formula, but as a framework to slow down, breathe deep, and listen.
And if you’re someone who thrives with a little more order, the Bread and Life Bible Study Journal offers a place to gather your journey all in one place. Each page is set up with space to write:
Scripture Reading: What passage are you sitting with today?
Key Verses: What stood out, spoke deep, or won’t let you go?
Observations & Interpretation: What’s the story saying? Where’s God revealing truth?
Personal Application: How does this shift your day? Your thinking? Your heart?
Prayer: Speak it. Scribble it. Pour it out.
Reflections & Action Steps: What’s the takeaway? Is there a step to take or a promise to trust?
These tools aren’t the goal. They’re companions. What matters is the encounter, with the Word, with the Spirit, with the Father who still walks in the garden calling your name.
With you in the journey, Dan
