Living for Eternity in a Temporary World
How to Keep Your Eyes on Heaven While Walking Through Earth’s Challenges
How to Live with Eternal Perspective in a Temporal World
Come on, church! We’re not here for ourselves—we’re here for something so much bigger than what we see with our eyes or feel in the moment. Do you know that? You’ve been born again into a kingdom that’s not of this world, and that means you’re called to live with eternity in your heart, not just today’s troubles.
Listen, this world is noisy, isn’t it? It’s full of distractions—work, bills, politics, relationships. It’s so easy to get caught up in what’s right in front of us, to live like this life is all there is. But I’m here to remind you: you’re not just here for now; you’re here forever. And when you live with that reality in mind, it changes everything.
1. Remember Whose You Are
Let’s start with this: you’re not your own. The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 6:20, “You were bought at a price.” Jesus didn’t just save you so you could go to heaven someday. He brought you into His kingdom now so you could live as a reflection of Him on earth.
Living with eternal perspective begins with understanding your identity. You’re a child of God, not a slave to this world. You’re an ambassador of heaven, not a citizen of earth. That’s why the Bible tells us, “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things” (Colossians 3:2).
Practical Step: Every day, remind yourself of who you are in Christ. Say it out loud if you need to: “I’m not my own; I belong to Jesus. My life is for His glory, not my comfort.”
2. See Life Through Heaven’s Eyes
Do you know how temporary this life is? James 4:14 says our lives are like a vapor—they appear for a little while and then vanish. But what you do here—how you love, serve, and walk in obedience—echoes into eternity.
When you live with heaven’s perspective, you stop sweating the small stuff. You stop chasing after things that don’t matter, and you start valuing what does. Relationships. Souls. Loving people the way Jesus does. That’s what lasts.
Practical Step: When faced with a decision, ask yourself: “Will this matter in eternity?” If it won’t, let it go. If it will, pour your heart into it.
3. Don’t Get Distracted by the Temporal
Let’s be real: the world is constantly pulling at us. Comfort, entertainment, possessions—they’re all fine in their place, but when they start to own you, you’ve lost sight of the bigger picture.
Jesus warned us about this in Matthew 6:19-20: “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven.”
What does that mean? It means stop building your life around things that don’t last. Stop putting all your energy into stuff that fades. Instead, invest in the kingdom.
Practical Step: Take inventory of your priorities. Where’s your time, money, and energy going? Ask God to help you refocus on eternal things.
4. Live Like You’re Passing Through
Hebrews 11:13 says that people of faith admitted they were “foreigners and strangers on earth.” Come on, church! That’s us! We’re just passing through. This world isn’t our home; heaven is.
When you know you’re passing through, you don’t cling too tightly to what’s here. You hold your possessions loosely. You let go of offenses quickly. You stop trying to build a life of comfort and start building a life that reflects Jesus.
Practical Step: Practice gratitude daily. Thank God for what you have, but keep your heart free from attachment to material things. Remind yourself: “This world is not my home.”
5. Be a Light in the Darkness
When you live with eternity in mind, your life becomes a beacon to others. People will see something different in you—a peace that doesn’t come from this world, a joy that isn’t tied to circumstances, a love that reflects heaven.
Jesus said, “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16). That’s what it’s all about! Living with an eternal perspective isn’t just for you—it’s for the people around you who need to see Jesus through your life.
Practical Step: Look for ways to serve and love others. Be intentional about showing Christ in your words and actions, especially in situations where the world would expect bitterness or selfishness.
6. Trust God’s Bigger Plan
Sometimes life hurts, doesn’t it? Sometimes we face loss, disappointment, or suffering that makes us want to give up. But church, can I tell you something? This life is not the end of the story. Romans 8:18 says, “I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.”
When you live with an eternal perspective, you can face trials with hope. You can trust that God is working all things together for good (Romans 8:28), even when you can’t see it right now.
Practical Step: When you’re going through a hard time, fix your eyes on Jesus. Pray and declare, “Lord, I trust Your plan. This is temporary, but Your glory is eternal.”
7. Stay in the Word
You can’t live with an eternal perspective if you’re not feeding on eternal truth. The Bible is your lifeline. It’s what renews your mind, strengthens your spirit, and reminds you of what’s real.
Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” If you’re not in the Word, how can you see where you’re going? How can you keep eternity in view when the world is trying to blur your vision?
Practical Step: Make Bible reading a daily habit. Even if it’s just one chapter or a few verses, let His Word shape your perspective every day.
Final Encouragement
Listen, living with an eternal perspective isn’t about ignoring the realities of life. It’s about seeing those realities through the lens of eternity. It’s about remembering that you’re part of something so much bigger than the here and now.
Jesus didn’t just save you to wait for heaven. He saved you to bring heaven to earth, to live like a citizen of His kingdom now, and to invite others into that reality through the way you love, serve, and reflect Him.
So, keep your eyes on Him. Stay grounded in His Word. Let go of what doesn’t matter and cling to what does. And never forget: this world is temporary, but the glory that awaits you is forever.
Let’s live for eternity, church. Let’s run this race with our eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2). Let’s live like we’re just passing through, because we are! Amen?
