Is Jesus God? Refuting the claim that Jesus is not Divine
A Biblical Defense of the Divinity of Christ
Preface: This article is a rebuttal of the claims in the article “Why Jesus can’t be God!” by Steve S.
One of the core truths of Christianity is that Jesus Christ is fully God and fully man. Yet, some argue that the Bible never teaches this, insisting that Jesus is only a man. This IS dangerous heresy attempting to infiltrate Christianity — the claim that Jesus is not God — threatens orthodox faith. They claim that ideas such as the incarnation, dual natures, and Christ's preexistence are foreign to the Scriptures and were later inventions of church councils.
However, when we examine the whole counsel of Scripture, we see that the earliest followers of Jesus, including His apostles, clearly proclaimed His divinity. Below, I will address some of the main objections raised against the divinity of Christ and demonstrate why these objections misrepresent Scripture and misunderstand Christian theology.
I. The Father Is the One True God—So Is Jesus
Critics often quote John 17:3, where Jesus calls the Father "the only true God." But this does not exclude Jesus from also being God. Scripture teaches that God is one in essence but exists in three persons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Consider these powerful affirmations of Jesus' divinity:
John 1:1 – "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."
John 20:28 – Thomas says to Jesus, "My Lord and my God!", and Jesus accepts this worship.
Titus 2:13 – "Our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ."
Colossians 2:9 – "For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form."
These verses cannot be ignored. Jesus shares fully in the divine nature of God while also being distinct from the Father.
II. Jesus Has a God—Because He Became Man
Passages like John 20:17 "I ascend to My Father and your Father, to My God and your God" reflect Jesus' humanity. In the incarnation, Jesus voluntarily humbled Himself, taking on human form Philippians 2:6-8.
Although He remains fully God, Jesus relates to the Father as a man, our representative. Hebrews 2:17 says He was "made like His brothers in every way."
III. The Incarnation and Pre-existence of Jesus
Objections often claim that the Bible never mentions "incarnation" or that Jesus' existence began at birth. But John 1:14 clearly teaches incarnation:
"And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth."
Jesus existed before His birth, as He Himself says:
"Before Abraham was, I am." John 8:58
"Father, glorify Me in Your presence with the glory I had with You before the world existed." John 17:5
These statements reveal His eternal preexistence and divinity.
IV. Jesus as Creator and Sustainer
Scripture explicitly says Jesus created all things:
"All things were made through Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made." John 1:3
"By Him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible." Colossians 1:16
If Jesus is the Creator, He cannot be a mere created being.
V. Jesus’ Authority, Worship, and Equality with God
While critics say Jesus was "given" authority Matthew 28:18, this does not deny His divinity. As God incarnate, He chose to operate under the Father's will for our salvation John 6:38.
Yet, Jesus accepts worship:
The disciples worship Him Matthew 14:33.
Angels are commanded to worship Him Hebrews 1:6.
Every knee will bow to Him Philippians 2:10-11.
Worship is for God alone Matthew 4:10. If Jesus were not God, this would be idolatry.
Moreover, Jesus claims equality with God:
"I and the Father are one." John 10:30
"Whoever has seen Me has seen the Father." John 14:9
The Jews understood He was claiming to be God and tried to stone Him for blasphemy John 10:33.
VI. Jesus' Humanity Does Not Deny His Divinity
Many objections focus on Jesus' human experiences—growing in wisdom Luke 2:52, being tempted Hebrews 4:15, not knowing the day of His return Mark 13:32.
These reflect His real human nature, which He took on for our salvation. The miracle is not that God can't become man, but that He willingly chose to.
"Though He was in the form of God, He did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, by taking the form of a servant." Philippians 2:6-8
Thus, the dual nature of Christ—fully God and fully man—is central to the gospel.
VII. Distinctions Within the Trinity Do Not Deny Christ's Divinity
The Bible makes clear distinctions between Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, but this does not mean they are separate gods.
The Trinity is one God in three persons:
"Baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." Matthew 28:19
"The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all." 2 Corinthians 13:14
These persons are distinct in role and relation but one in essence and being.
VIII. The Early Church and Apostolic Teaching
The claim that the early church did not believe in Jesus' divinity is false. From the earliest days, the apostles taught that Jesus is Lord Acts 2:36, Savior, and God Titus 2:13.
The apostolic preaching, as recorded in Scripture, affirms:
Jesus as Lord of all Acts 10:36
Jesus as God and Savior 2 Peter 1:1
Jesus as the Judge of the living and the dead Acts 17:31
Conclusion: Why It Matters
Believing in Jesus as God is essential to the Christian faith. If Jesus were only a man, His death could not atone for the sins of the world 1 John 2:2. Only God Himself can save us Isaiah 43:11.
"If you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins." John 8:24
Christians worship Jesus because He is God, the eternal Son, incarnate for our salvation, risen in glory, and returning in power. To deny His divinity is to deny the gospel itself.
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us." John 1:1, 14
Final Word
Rather than being "added later," the truth of Jesus' divinity flows naturally from the whole of Scripture, from Genesis to Revelation. It is the foundation of Christian worship, salvation, and eternal life.
Jesus is fully God, fully man—our Savior, Lord, and King.
