Intimacy with God: Returning to the Garden
Rediscovering the Depth of Relationship with God and Walking in His Presence Daily
When you think of intimacy, what comes to mind? Is it closeness, vulnerability, or trust? For many of us, the word intimacy feels distant, almost foreign, in our relationship with God. We’re quick to settle for knowledge about Him instead of knowing Him. But let me tell you something: Jesus didn’t die to give us a religion; He died to restore relationship. Intimacy with God is the very heartbeat of the Gospel, and it’s time we stop living as distant acquaintances of our Creator and start walking in the closeness He’s always desired.
The Foundation of Intimacy
Think back to the Garden of Eden. Before sin entered the world, Adam and Eve walked with God in the cool of the day. They didn’t just know about God—they knew Him. There was no shame, no fear, no barriers. That’s what intimacy looks like. But when sin entered, humanity lost more than a home; we lost that closeness. And ever since, God has been on a mission to restore it.
Jesus didn’t come just to get you to heaven—He came to bring heaven back into you. Eternal life isn’t just living forever; it’s knowing God deeply
“Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. John 17:3”
And you can know Him. Right here, right now.
Breaking the Barriers
The greatest lie the enemy whispers is that you’re unworthy of intimacy with God. He’ll remind you of your failures, your weaknesses, and your shame. But here’s the truth: Jesus has already dealt with all of it. The blood of Jesus didn’t just forgive your sins; it cleansed you completely. You’re not just forgiven—you’re made new. And in Christ, nothing stands between you and the Father.
So stop believing the lie that you have to earn intimacy. Stop striving to be “good enough” for God. Intimacy isn’t achieved; it’s received. It’s the natural outflow of knowing you’re fully loved, fully accepted, and fully His.
Practical Steps to Cultivate Intimacy
Spend Time with Him
Intimacy grows with time. Set aside moments to be alone with God—not out of duty, but out of desire. Talk to Him. Listen for His voice. Open your Bible and let His Word speak to your heart.Be Vulnerable
Don’t hide your struggles or emotions from God. He already knows them. Bring your doubts, fears, and pain to Him. He’s not offended by your humanity; He’s drawn to it.Practice Gratitude
Gratitude shifts your focus from what’s missing to what’s already present. Thank Him for His faithfulness, His love, and His presence in your life. Intimacy thrives in an atmosphere of thanksgiving.Obey His Voice
Intimacy isn’t just about hearing God; it’s about responding to Him. When you step out in faith and follow His leading, your trust in Him deepens.
Living as His Beloved
You weren’t made to live distant from God. You weren’t created to settle for a surface-level relationship. You were designed for intimacy. And the good news is that God is more eager to draw near to you than you are to Him.
James 4:8 says, “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” That’s a promise. When you take one step toward Him, He comes running. And when you begin to walk in intimacy, everything changes. You’ll stop striving for approval because you’ll know you’re already loved. You’ll stop fearing the future because you’ll trust the One who holds it. You’ll stop living like an orphan and start living like a child of the King.
So, what’s holding you back? The invitation is open. The Father’s arms are wide. Step into His presence today and experience the intimacy you were created for.
