We live in a time like no other, don’t we? We’ve got these little devices in our hands that can connect us to the whole world in seconds. Think about that! You can share the love of Jesus with someone on the other side of the planet with a single post. But at the same time, those same devices can pull us into distraction, temptation, and negativity if we’re not careful. This is the reality of living in a digital age, and as followers of Jesus, we’ve got to learn how to navigate this world without losing sight of Him.
1. Guard Your Heart and Mind
Listen, it’s so easy to let the digital world sneak into your heart and steal your focus. The Bible says in Proverbs 4:23 to “guard your heart with all diligence, for out of it flow the issues of life.” Do you hear what God’s saying? Your heart is the wellspring of your life! What you let in—what you watch, what you read, what you scroll through—that’s what’s going to influence your thoughts, your emotions, and even your faith.
I’m not saying social media or the internet are evil. They’re tools. But tools in the wrong hands can cause damage. If we’re not intentional, those tools can feed insecurity, comparison, and even sin. It’s about being real with yourself and asking, What am I feeding on? Is this pointing me toward Jesus or pulling me away?
Challenge: Take inventory of your digital habits. Are you spending more time on your phone than with God? If so, what needs to change? Set boundaries. Create space for His voice to be the loudest one you hear.
2. Use Technology for the Kingdom
Listen, the enemy would love for you to see all the negatives of the internet and just throw your hands up and say, “Forget it!” But what if God’s calling us to redeem the digital space? What if He’s saying, This is a tool I’ve placed in your hands to reveal My love to the world?
Think about the Great Commission: “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15). The internet gives us access to “all the world” in ways previous generations could never imagine. What an opportunity! Come on, what’s stopping you from sharing your testimony, posting scriptures, or being a voice of hope online?
Encouragement: Let your posts, your comments, and your interactions online be an overflow of Christ in you. Don’t just use technology; use it for Him. Be intentional. Be bold. Be love.
3. Prioritize Time with God
Now, this is huge. If we’re not careful, our devices will rule our time and attention. The digital world is relentless—it doesn’t sleep! There’s always a new notification, a new video, a new post. But here’s the question: Are we more drawn to our phones than we are to the presence of God?
Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still, and know that I am God.” Let that sink in. Be still. That means turning off the noise, shutting out the distractions, and giving God your undivided attention. If we don’t create space for Him in our day, how can we expect to hear His voice clearly?
Practical Step: Start your day with Jesus, not your phone. Before you check emails or social media, open the Word. Pray. Invite the Holy Spirit to guide your day. Let Him have the first fruits of your time.
4. Be a Reflection of Christ Online
Do you know that your words carry power, even online? Ephesians 4:29 says, “Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.” This applies to every comment you leave, every post you write, every interaction you have.
It’s heartbreaking to see Christians getting caught up in arguments, debates, and negativity online. Listen, Jesus didn’t call us to win arguments; He called us to love people. That doesn’t mean we compromise truth, but it means we speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15).
Heart Check: Before you post or reply to something, ask yourself, Does this represent Jesus? Am I building others up, or am I tearing them down? Remember, you’re an ambassador of Christ, even on the internet. Let your words be seasoned with grace.
5. Don’t Replace Real Connection with Digital Connection
Now, I love that we can connect with people online, but nothing replaces face-to-face fellowship. Hebrews 10:24-25 tells us not to neglect meeting together. Why? Because there’s something powerful about being in the same room, worshiping together, praying together, and encouraging one another.
It’s easy to let the convenience of digital relationships replace real-world connections, but don’t fall into that trap. We need each other. We’re the body of Christ, and the body doesn’t function when it’s disconnected.
Encouragement: Use digital tools to enhance your relationships, not replace them. Reach out to people in your local church. Invite someone over for coffee. Worship together in person.
6. Stay Rooted in His Word
Finally, church, the best way to stay grounded in a digital age is to stay rooted in His Word. The internet is full of opinions, information, and voices competing for your attention. But only one voice matters: His.
Jesus said in John 8:31-32, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” The Word of God is your anchor. It’s your filter for everything you see and hear.
Action Step: Make Bible reading a daily priority. Let the Word shape your perspective, your decisions, and your actions—online and offline.
Conclusion: Redeem the Digital Age
Brothers and sisters, we are living in exciting times. Yes, there are challenges in this digital world, but there are also incredible opportunities to shine His light and spread His love. Don’t let technology shape you—let Jesus shape how you use technology.
Let’s be intentional about guarding our hearts, sharing His love, prioritizing time with Him, and staying connected to the body of Christ. We’re not here to escape the world; we’re here to bring heaven to earth, even in the digital space. So let’s rise up, use the tools we’ve been given, and glorify Him in everything we do. Amen?
