When a new believer opens the Bible for the first time, something incredible happens. They read with wonder. They see a God who moves mountains, heals the sick, and speaks life into the dead. They take His promises at face value, unburdened by theological arguments or denominational divisions.
Then, over time, something changes for many believers. They become familiar with church culture, with theological debates, with traditions and expectations. Slowly, faith that was once pure and unquestioning can get worn down by skepticism, disappointment, and the voices of those who have learned to explain away the power of God.
But what if we never lost that initial trust? What if we read the Bible with the same awe we had when we first believed?
The Fresh Eyes of a New Believer
A new believer sees the Word as living and active. When they read Mark 16:17-18, where Jesus says that His followers will cast out demons, speak in new tongues, and heal the sick, they believe it. No disclaimers. No fine print. They believe if Jesus said it, then it must be true.
They don’t overanalyze. They don’t filter God’s power through past experiences. They don’t limit what God can do based on what they’ve seen or not seen. They just believe.
The Worn-Down Perspective
Contrast this with someone who has spent years in the church but has been worn down by theological debates and unanswered prayers. When they read the same passages, their mind immediately goes to arguments:
"That was only for the early church."
"God doesn’t work that way anymore."
"Maybe it’s just symbolic."
Instead of simply believing what God says, they explain away why certain things don’t happen anymore. They may love God, but their faith has been filtered through years of disappointment and religious reasoning.
Jesus’ Call to Childlike Faith
Jesus said, "Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven." (Matthew 18:3)
Children believe without complication. They trust without hesitation. They don’t need every answer to obey. That’s how we are called to approach God’s Word—without skepticism, without rationalizing away the miraculous, without editing the Bible to fit our experiences.
Choosing to Believe Again
Maybe you’ve been in the faith for a long time, and you’ve felt that gradual drift toward skepticism. Maybe past disappointments have made it hard to believe like you once did. But you don’t have to stay there.
Faith isn’t about seeing first—it’s about believing first. Hebrews 11:6 says, "Without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him." (Hebrews 11:6)
God is looking for people who will take Him at His Word, who will dare to believe in His power even when they don’t have all the answers. Will you be one of them?
