A friend of mine who is a pastor shared a clear and needed word about leadership and responsibility. He spoke about how leaders must own what happens under their care, how truth must be pursued carefully, and how humility is required when wrong is exposed. He also said plainly what should never need softening. Racism is wrong. Cover up is wrong. Demeaning anyone made in the image of God is wrong. There are no excuses. That kind of clarity matters, especially in moments that wound trust and reveal darkness.

Reading his words, I found myself in deep agreement. At the same time, a parallel reflection formed in me, coming from a slightly different angle shaped by the wisdom of Elder Sergei.

Where my friend emphasized responsibility in leadership, Elder Sergei presses into responsibility of the heart. He teaches that when we see sin in another person, we should first ask why the light we carry in Christ is not bright enough to call them toward higher aspiration or to dissuade them from their path. That question never excuses evil. It humbles us. It turns the searchlight inward before it turns outward.

And this is not only personal. We also have to ask it about the light the Church carries together. If people are not being drawn toward repentance, healing, and transformation, the answer cannot only be outrage at darkness. It must also be a deeper return to Christ so His light burns more clearly within us and among us.

Scripture says,

“If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”

2 Chronicles 7:14

“My people called by My name” points to those who belong to Christ. We are His people, His body, called Christians. We are in Him and He is in us. To humble ourselves is to recognize that we are not without sin and that repentance begins with us. We cannot approach the throne of God apart from the cleansing and reconciliation given through the blood of Christ.

Then comes the promise. He will heal our land. He will restore peace, order, and harmony. The beginning is humility, prayer, repentance, and return.

So I hear two harmonizing calls. One says name evil clearly, take responsibility, walk in humility, and make things right. The other says guard the heart from hatred, refuse self righteousness, repent first, and become intercessors who still pray, Lord have mercy on us all.

Both lead to the same place.

Our hope is not in leaders getting everything right, but in Christ who meets broken places with redemption.

We need Jesus.

Becoming like Christ does not happen all at once. It unfolds through effort, failure, repentance, and return. The heart moves toward Him, then stumbles, then rises again. This movement becomes the shape of the Christian life.

Christ likeness does not begin with strength. It begins with desire. A person sees the Gospel and recognizes a distance. Thoughts wander. Passions pull. Love grows thin. This knowledge wounds the heart, yet it also opens it. The soul learns that it cannot become Christ like by effort alone.

The Church never hid this truth. The saints speak plainly. Every fall exposes weakness. Every weakness calls for mercy. The problem is not falling short. The problem is refusing to rise.

Striving Reveals the Heart

Striving does not mean forcing virtue. It means choosing Christ again after failure. Each struggle brings what lies hidden inside. Pride appears. Fear speaks. Self love resists prayer. None of this surprises Christ.

The struggle itself becomes light. It shows where healing must happen. When a person keeps striving, grace begins to work quietly. The heart grows honest. Repentance deepens. Prayer loses decoration and becomes simple.

“Abide in Me, and I in you” John 15:4 speaks of this work. Abiding means staying. It means returning. It means refusing to leave Christ even when effort feels empty.

Falling Short Does Not End the Path

Every Christian falls short of the image of Christ. The Gospel assumes this.

May this year unfold within Your will.
Not in success, but in truth.

God did not enter the world with noise. He came small, hidden, carried in the womb of a woman. The Eternal chose weight and warmth, blood and breath. He accepted the slow forming of limbs, the waiting of months, the first cry that depends on another. Nothing hurried Him. Nothing shielded Him from weakness.

This manner of coming reveals the heart of God. He does not seize the world. He receives it. He does not overwhelm creation. He asks for room within it. The womb became His first dwelling. Flesh became His language. Through a woman He learned the nearness of love and the cost of it.

The season bears its own quiet witness. He came as the days shortened. Light withdrew earlier each evening. Fields rested. Travel slowed. Winter drew near. In that stillness the Child was born. Cold air held Him. Night wrapped Him. God chose a time when the world feels bare, when hope seems thin, when waiting deepens.

Winter speaks without explanation. Life withdraws beneath the ground. Branches stand stripped. What remains is trust. In such a time God entered history, not to escape the cold but to dwell within it. He shared the fragile beginning of every human life, knowing its end. The cradle already faced the cross.

The womb that bore Him also points toward the grave that would receive Him. Birth and death stand close in this mystery. The One who began in hiddenness accepted the silence of the tomb. Yet His coming as a child tells of a gentler truth. God draws near before the end. He comes early, while breath remains, while the door still opens.

Scripture holds a simple plea. “Do your utmost to come before winter.”
2 Timothy 4:21

Winter comes to every life. The body cools. Strength lessens. Words grow few. God does not wait for that hour to be found. He comes first as an infant, asking to be received. He stands at the beginning so that the end will not be empty.

The Child of Bethlehem still comes quietly. He seeks a place to rest, not made by effort but by humility. His nearness heals without force. His light warms without glare. To meet Him before winter is to let Him enter now, while the heart still stirs, while repentance still breathes, while mercy still feels near.

This is the season of His choosing. Cold surrounds the world. Darkness lingers. In such a time God arrives, small and true, inviting the soul to meet Him before the night deepens.

Many hearts are turning toward Eastern Orthodoxy with a quiet urgency. This turning does not come from fashion or reaction. It rises from a hunger that has grown tired of noise.

Life has become crowded with words. Opinions multiply. Explanations fill every space. Yet the soul often remains untouched. Orthodoxy does not rush to explain. It stands still before God. It teaches the heart to bow, to listen, to wait. In that stillness many recognize something they had lost and never forgot.

The Church carries a memory older than nations. Prayer here has not been reshaped to suit passing needs. The hymns breathe the same faith sung by monks in deserts and martyrs in prisons. This continuity offers rest. Nothing must be reinvented. Nothing needs to be proven. The faith is received, not assembled.

Worship draws many who have grown weary of performance. The Divine Liturgy does not seek to impress. It opens heaven quietly.

A quiet longing has been growing in me for some time. It rises most often in the early hours, when the house still rests in silence and the heart leans toward prayer. I keep sensing a gentle pull toward a small chapel in the backyard, a simple place shaped by wood, earth, and the hope of meeting God with an open heart.

This thought stays with me through the day. I imagine a little room set apart, a lamp glowing before an icon, the stillness holding the name of Christ without hurry. The longing feels steady, not rushed, as if it comes from a deeper place than my own planning. Something within me desires a shelter where prayer can breathe without distraction, where the soul can find a quiet corner to return to again and again.

I think of stepping inside such a chapel when the light fades in the evening, the peace that follows a few slow breaths, the warmth that comes when the mind settles and the heart calls upon the Lord. I imagine reading the Psalms there, letting the words soften the rough edges of the day. I imagine the comfort of the Mother of God, the strength of the saints, the gentle nearness of the Holy Spirit. Their presence feels close even now, and the thought of giving them a small home on my own ground fills me with a quiet joy.

Sometimes I wonder why this desire has grown so strong. It seems tied to repentance, to the wish for a steadier life before God. A small chapel would not solve anything by itself, but it might deepen the way I listen. It might help me remember the mercy shown in my weakness. It might gather my scattered thoughts and turn them again toward Christ.

The words of the Lord rest softly on my mind, “When you pray, go into your room”.
Matthew 6:6

This little space I hope to build feels like that room. Not grand, not distant, just a humble place where the heart can settle and learn patience. The desire itself has already begun to change me. It slows me down. It reminds me that holiness can grow quietly, even in the soil behind my own home.

If God allows it, this small chapel may stand as a sign of His peace. But even now, before a single board is placed, the longing has become a prayer that draws me closer to Him.

Imagine a single straight line that begins at birth and continues through death, opening into the presence of God. This is the true path of a human life, set by the wisdom and mercy of the Creator. We were fashioned to walk that line in simplicity and love, with a heart turned toward the One who calls. Yet sin bends the will. Selfishness and self centeredness nudge the feet to the side until the steps no longer aim toward the true horizon.

Only Christ has walked this line without deviation. He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, and in Him there is no shadow of turning. His thoughts, His silence, His words, His suffering, all were perfectly aligned with the will of the Father. Confessing Him as Lord is essential, yet confession alone does not make the walk straight. The heart must be kept awake, watchful, ready to turn again back toward Him at every moment.

Why the heart strays

The heart strays for many reasons. Love cools. Pride rises. Fear grows louder than trust. What should be offered to God becomes held as possession. The Fathers speak of this drift with clear sobriety and with hope. St. Isaac the Syrian says, This life has been given to you for repentance; do not waste it on vain pursuits. Repentance is not a single event. It is the steady return of the heart to the straight line.

St. John Climacus writes, Repentance is the renewal of baptism. The soul is not crushed by this word. It is lifted and made ready for the next step. St. Macarius the Great teaches, The heart itself is a small vessel, yet dragons and lions are there; also there are angels and the Lord. The battle and the healing both happen within the same small space. No one is abandoned.

Recalibration, the daily turning

When the drift becomes known, the task is simple. Call upon Jesus. Not once, but continually. Many times in a single day if needed. Pray, receive Holy Communion, read the Scriptures, listen for the quiet voice of the Holy Spirit, and compare the present position of the heart to the place where Christ stands. Then recalibrate, and set a new heading toward Him. This is not a technique. It is a life of trust and obedience.

The ancient prayer of the Church helps the soul breathe with humility, Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner. St. Theophan the Recluse counsels a steady spirit, Seek to establish in the heart a quiet, warm, and constant turning toward God. Do not chase after extraordinary states. Constancy matters more than flashes of feeling. St. Porphyrios of Kafsokalyvia offers the same simplicity, Love Christ and put nothing before His love.

The thinness of the line

The line is infinitely thin. Christ does not move. It is we who wander. The smallest change in heading can seem harmless at the moment, yet over many years it opens a wide gap. The adversary feeds on this misconception, whispering that a slight degree off is no great matter. The saints teach vigilance that is free of anxiety and filled with peace. To notice quickly is a gift. To return quickly is freedom.

St. Silouan the Athonite gives a word for those who feel lost, Keep your mind in hell and despair not. This is not gloom. It is the rejection of pride and the refusal of despair at the same time. Humility sees the truth about the heart. Hope sees the face of Christ and walks again.

Instruments of true course

The Church places sure instruments in the hands of the faithful

1. Prayer of the heart, short and frequent. The Jesus Prayer becomes the breath of the soul.

2. Scripture, read with attention and reverence, not rushed. The Gospels become the daily horizon.

3. Holy Communion, received after confession and preparation, uniting the walker to the One who already walked the line for us.

4. Holy Confession, where the drift is brought into light, and the compass is reset through absolution.

5. Silence, where the mind grows still enough to notice small deviations and to receive the counsel of the Spirit.

6. Works of mercy, the outward shape of a heart that turns toward Christ, since love of neighbor clears the inner sight.

Early and often, yet never too late

Course correction works best when it is early and often. A small return is easier than a great one. Yet even a great return is not impossible. No one is beyond the reach of the Lord. The thief on the cross turned at the last moment and was welcomed into Paradise. Grace is not meager. Mercy is not small.

St. Mark the Ascetic reminds the heart, Do the good you know, and the God whom you do not yet know will reveal Himself to you. St. John Climacus teaches, Do not be surprised that you fall every day; do not give up, but stand your ground with courage. These words do not shatter a bruised reed. They guard hope.

A quiet rule for steady feet

• A simple pattern can help the day hold a straight course

• Morning, make the sign of the Cross and pray the Our Father with attention. Read a short Gospel passage. Offer the day to God.

• Through the day, repeat the Jesus Prayer with a soft breath. Pause before each task. Seek a word from the Lord in a few verses of Scripture. Choose one act of mercy.

• Evening, make a brief examination of conscience. Confess the day’s drift without excuses. Give thanks for every mercy noticed. Read a psalm. Entrust the night to Christ.

• Each week, make room for the Divine Liturgy and Holy Communion, with preparation and thanksgiving.

• Each month, or as often as needed, come to Holy Confession.

The face that does not move

Christ remains where He has always been. He is the still center. He is the fixed point. Each time the heart turns, He receives. Each time the feet resume the walk, He strengthens. The line is narrow, yet it is full of light, for it is traced by His own steps.

May this quiet work of returning and returning again be the rhythm of a lifetime. May the Spirit keep the compass true. May the end of the line open into the merciful arms of God.

The timbers of a cross aren’t carved from softwood. They don’t bend to your shoulder or nestle into the folds of your routine. They dig in. They scrape the skin. They press against your frame and break the things that never belonged there to begin with.

Jesus said, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me” (Luke 9:23). He didn’t offer it as metaphor. He walked it, step by step, under the weight of rough wood soaked in the sweat of condemned men. Splinters worked their way into already torn shoulders. Blood darkened the grain. He stumbled under it not because He lacked strength but because the cross is meant to crush what belongs to the old world. It was never intended to be manageable. It was meant to kill.

The command to carry our cross doesn’t begin with action. It begins with surrender. You cannot lift the cross while clutching the things you think will save you. It won’t fit between your arms full of fear, your tight grip on reputation, your desire to manage every outcome. The cross makes no room for that.

The life of self must be laid down before the cross can be taken up.

We try to bargain. To carry it with one hand while holding our plans with the other. We imagine we can follow Christ without dying where He died. But the path doesn’t widen for our comfort. It narrows to the shape of His footsteps, and to follow Him, we must become small.

And the cross is exposure.

It doesn’t permit shadows. The crucified body is nailed wide and bare, arms stretched open, unable to shield its core from sun, storm, or scorn. It offers no defense from spit, from jeers, from the sting of wind through open wounds. There’s no part of you you can hide on a cross. No image to preserve. No control to keep. It’s where all pretense is stripped away and only truth remains, wounded, visible, surrendered.

And it is personal. Singular.

You can’t climb the beams with your arms around your loved ones. You can’t shield your children or explain yourself to your spouse from up there. The road to the cross narrows until it fits only your feet. Not because love fails but because this is where love is made real.

You die alone, so that you might live in communion. Alone with Christ, who was first alone for us. The cross doesn’t isolate you. It frees you from the lie that you ever had to save anyone. It turns your clinging into trust. It places your family, your future, your very breath into the hands of the Father.

And this is where resurrection begins.

The cross is not a lifestyle addition. It is not a cause to rally behind or a symbol to wear. It is the end of the old man. The end of striving and self-protection. The end of proving and posturing. It is your grave. And it is your birthplace.

Saint Paul said, “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me” (Galatians 2:20). The early Church didn’t soften those words. The martyrs believed them with their blood. The desert fathers carried them in silence across burning sands. The cross has always been the door.

Some carry it quietly, a thousand little deaths of pride behind closed doors. Some carry it in the open, mocked and misunderstood for righteousness. Some carry it in hospitals, in kitchens, in monasteries, in prisons. But no one carries it with their arms full.

It’s only when we let go, of the need to be seen, the hunger to be in control, the fear of pain, that we finally have hands empty enough to lift it.

And when we do, when we say yes to that wood pressing into our frame, we find something waiting for us. Or rather, Someone.

He is there. Always ahead. Always near. The Lamb who was slain. The Shepherd who does not ask us to go where He has not gone. His voice in the dust. His strength in our weakness. His love stretched wide where we once feared to be seen.

The cross is heavy. But it is holy.

Lay it all down. Pick up the timber. And follow Him.

to gather His own

were not made to chase conspiracies
or decode the date of Majesty

to abide in Him
to walk as He walked
to carry His Spirit into your ordinary hours

So wake
Feed the hungry in His name
Speak peace like He did in storms
Forgive your enemies
not because they deserve it
but because He forgave you from a cross

Hold your child like Christ sees them
because He does
Kiss your wife like He could come tonight
because He might

Live like He is risen
because He is
Walk like the Kingdom is already breaking in
because it is

And when the sky finally splits
you’ll not be surprised
You’ll be found already burning
heart steady
lamp full
eyes fixed
on Jesus Christ
the returning King
who knows your name

The Lord often gives us images that make heavenly things clearer, even through the simple realities of daily life. One such thought came to me in an ordinary way, through food. We call many things food, from quick meals grabbed on the run to a slow feast at a family table. Both give fuel, both keep a person alive. Yet there is a difference between survival and health, between being filled and being nourished.

Fast food can keep the body moving, but it is thin in certain nutrients. Over time, something is missing. The body may carry on, but it does not flourish. When we begin to eat with more care, with whole foods, balanced meals, and the right supplements, the body begins to change. It grows strong, vibrant, resilient. It has what it needs, not only to survive but to thrive. And when the body lacks these essential nourishments it begins to atrophy. Slowly, weakness shows itself, and what was once able to carry weight and endure no longer can. In the same way, we see this reality presenting itself in some denominations that are crumbling, not because Christ is absent, but because what sustains the soul in fullness has been thinned out.

For the past month and a half I have been attending an Orthodox church, and the experience has brought this image into sharper focus. It has highlighted how anemic many other denominations are in their representation of the Gospel. In Orthodoxy, the Gospel is not reduced to a message of survival but is lived as a full and abundant life in Christ. The liturgy, the sacraments, the icons, the fasting seasons—all of it speaks the Gospel in a way that surrounds and nourishes the whole person.

This picture, in a way, reflects the mystery of the Church. Many Christian traditions hand on true faith in Christ, they give the bread of life, and souls are sustained. But Orthodoxy has preserved the fullness of the ancient table, the complete medicine of Christ’s Body. The Holy Spirit has safeguarded not only the essentials of faith but the fullness of spiritual nourishment: the sacraments, the prayers, the icons, the ascetic path, the communion of the saints, and the continuity of life in the Church since the apostles.

Saint Irenaeus once wrote that “where the Church is, there is the Spirit of God; and where the Spirit of God is, there is the Church and every grace.” This is not said to diminish others but to show that the Orthodox life is not merely about keeping the soul alive until heaven. It is about healing, restoration, and transfiguration. It is the medicine that cures the sickness of sin at its roots and trains the soul to breathe eternity even now.

The fast food of faith can keep a man alive, he may love Christ sincerely, and Christ receives him with love. Yet in Orthodoxy the soul finds the whole table spread before it. Fasting, confession, holy mysteries, ancient prayers, all of these work together to supply what the soul needs for its true health. They lead a person into communion with God that is not only survival, but abundant life.

To embrace Orthodoxy is to sit at the banquet where Christ Himself is the Host. Here the human being learns not simply to live by faith, but to become fire with God’s own life, to taste already in this world the joy of the Kingdom.

We are weary of the headlines,
the sharpened tongues,
the hands clenched tight around old grievances.
We are tired of fire being met with fire
and every heart becoming a furnace
where mercy used to dwell.

O Jesus,
who wept over a city that would not listen,
who touched lepers no one else would see,
who bled while asking forgiveness for His killers,
teach us again
what love looks like with skin on.

The night feels thick with hatred,
like the ache of creation groaning,
as nations forget their names,
and people forget their souls.

Father,
rescue us from the sickness
of becoming what we fear.
Let us not mirror the malice
we claim to despise.
Let us not trade the radiant Kingdom
for the bitter thrones of vengeance.

May we learn again
how to wash the feet of those who mock us.
How to bless when cursed.
How to break bread with Judas
and still call him “friend.”

For You, Christ,
You didn’t come wielding a sword of iron,
but a heart broken open,
a Lamb leading lions back home.

Teach us how to bleed without bitterness,
to speak truth without venom,
to stand firm without raising fists.

Let Your mercy be the map.
Let Your grace be the grammar
of our every conversation.

Hold the world like a prodigal son
whose rage hides sorrow,
whose violence is a cry for home.
And send us, wounded, willing, weak,
as living parables
of the cross-shaped love
that still saves sinners.

Orthodoxy is not a cage,
but a river that has cut its way through stone,
carving faith deep into the earth,
so when I kneel,
my knees find the grooves of saints who knelt before me.

It is the fire carried in clay lamps,
passed hand to hand across centuries,
a flame that will not die,
though empires fall and languages fade like smoke.

It is the sound of a voice steady in the storm,
saying again what is true,
what was true,
what will always be true:
that Christ has come,
that Christ has died,
that Christ has risen,
and He will come again.

And I find myself caught up in it,
not as a prisoner,
but as a son,
standing in the long shadow of the cross,
feeling the light pour through wounds that tell me who I am.

Child of God, do not let your heart grow weary when the night seems long or when the silence of heaven presses upon you. The Lord is near to those who call upon Him in truth. Prayer is not words cast into emptiness, but the breath of the soul lifted into the bosom of the Father. When your lips move with faith, even trembling faith, the Spirit Himself carries your petitions as incense before the throne.

Do not measure prayer by its sweetness or by visible answers, but by its faithfulness. A candle burns steadily whether or not it is noticed; so also let your prayer burn, unseen by men, but bright before the eyes of God. And though storms may come and trials wound your peace, keep the lamp of faith trimmed with oil, for the Bridegroom does not delay.

Hold fast, beloved, to fervent prayer, for through it you walk in company with the saints and angels. Through it the soul learns to dwell already in the Kingdom. The Lord is compassionate; He will not despise your persistence. And at the proper time, His light will scatter the shadows, and His peace will embrace you.

We often picture Peter as bold and brash. He rushes in without hesitation, speaks before thinking, swings a sword when others freeze, and promises undying loyalty just hours before denying Jesus. But there is one moment that slips by quietly, and it tells us something more about him. Something honest and deeply human.

Peter could swim.

He was a fisherman by trade. His world was water and wind, nets and wooden boats, and the unpredictable moods of the Sea of Galilee. Swimming was not a luxury for him. It was part of life. If you worked that lake for a living, you knew how to move through the water. It was not optional.

And we see this clearly in John 21:7. After the resurrection, when Jesus stood on the shore and called out, “It is the Lord,” Peter did not hesitate. He put on his outer garment, jumped into the sea, and went straight to Him. The others stayed in the boat, pulling in the net full of fish. But Peter could not wait. He had to be near Him.

The text does not use the word swim, but it does not need to. The distance was about two hundred cubits, which is close to one hundred yards. Peter did not float or drift. He swam.

That small detail brings new light to another moment.

Back in Matthew 14, Peter does something no fisherman had ever done. He steps out of the boat and walks on water. Jesus is coming toward them across the waves, and Peter says, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You.” Jesus says come. So Peter walks. Not for long, but he walks.

Then the wind rises. The fear returns. His eyes shift from Jesus to the storm. And he begins to sink.

Remember now that Peter could swim. He could have kicked and floated and made his way back to the boat. But he does not. He does not try to save himself. He does not rely on what he knows. He cries out, “Lord, save me.” And Jesus reaches out and catches him.

Peter knew how to swim. But in that moment, he remembered something greater. He knew who to trust.

Many of us are skilled in our own ways. We know how to survive, how to fix things, how to keep moving. We are good at doing. But there comes a time when the Lord is not asking us to do more. He is asking us to trust more. To surrender the reflex to save ourselves. To let Him hold us instead.

Peter could swim. But when it truly mattered, he waited on the hand of Jesus.

A young man once came running to Jesus, breathless with sincerity, and asked what so many of us quietly wonder: “Teacher, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?” (Matthew 19:16).

Jesus first points him to the commandments, and the man, with honest eyes, says he has kept them. Then comes the moment that pierces: “One thing thou lackest: if thou wouldest be perfect, go, sell that which thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me” (Matthew 19:21).

That “one more thing.”

It always feels too much. For the rich young man, it was his wealth, the security that held his heart. For us, it may not be coins in a purse but our pride, our comfort, our control, that one hidden place we guard from God.

And so the man walked away sorrowful, because he loved his wealth, and he knew he could not let it go.

Jesus turns to His disciples and says words that echo through the centuries: “With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26).

That is the heart of Christianity. Jesus never asks us for what we can do in our own strength. He asks us for what we cannot. He asks for the surrender of the thing we cling to most, knowing that on our own, our fingers will never let it go. But He does not leave us staring at the impossible. He offers His hand.

To be a Christian is to say yes to that one more thing, not because we trust ourselves, but because we trust Him. We say yes trembling, whispering, “Lord, I cannot, but You can. Take my hand. Lead me.”

And when we do, the impossible becomes possible. The heart once bound becomes free. The weight once crushing becomes light. That is the miracle of grace: not our strength stretched to the breaking point, but His life carrying us where we could never walk alone.

The rich young man went away sad, but the invitation still stands for you and me. Christ is still saying, “Come, follow Me.” And the Father is still able to do in us what we never could do in ourselves.

I’ve seen the mocking posts after the school shooting, ridiculing people for saying “our prayers are with you.” As if prayer is some weak gesture, a useless substitute for action. Brothers and sisters, do not let the world confuse you. Prayer is not empty words cast into the void. Prayer is standing before the living God, who created heaven and earth, interceding for souls, crying out for mercy, and asking Him to heal what no legislation, no social program, no human wisdom can touch—the human heart.

It is madness to act as though prayer is ineffective. Every Liturgy we pray for the peace of the whole world, for those in suffering, for captives, for the departed, for every city and land. Do we imagine that the saints, the apostles, and the martyrs wasted their lives in prayer? Do we forget that Christ Himself prayed with tears and groaning before the Father? If prayer is useless, then Christianity is a lie. And yet we know the opposite is true: prayer is how heaven enters earth.

Of course, prayer does not excuse us from acting. We must feed the hungry, protect the vulnerable, build just laws, and stand against evil. But without prayer, all action becomes self-reliant striving, cut off from the only One who can change the root of violence—our corrupted hearts. We will surely wither if we cut ourselves off from the Vine, for apart from Him we can do nothing (John 15:5).

The secular world will always mock the ways of Christ. But let us remember, it was the ways that seemed right to man that led us into sin, separation, and death—the very reason we now stand in desperate need of the prayer they despise. Do not be discouraged when they sneer, for even Christ was mocked as He prayed to His Father in His darkest hour upon the Cross. And He gave us the model: “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34). So let our prayers rise not only for the victims and their families, but even for those who mock and scorn, that God may open their eyes to the hope they reject.

To mock prayer in the face of tragedy is to mock the only hope we have. The world wants quick fixes, but prayer calls down eternal life. The blood of those children is not forgotten by God. He will judge rightly. And until that day, we will keep praying, because only in His presence can grief be carried and evil be defeated.

“Be not anxious for anything; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God” (Philippians 4:6).
